The Nigerian Navy and SIFAX Group have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration aimed at enhancing maritime security and supporting national development. This followed a visit by the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Western Naval Command (WNC), Rear Admiral Abdullahi Abubakar Mustapha, to the Chairman of SIFAX Group, Dr. Taiwo Afolabi. Mustapha said the visit was part of efforts to deepen civil-military cooperation and build strategic partnerships in the sector. The Nigerian Navy has foiled a suspected sea robbery attempt and rescued 16 passengers along the Ibaka–Calabar Channel during a swift, coordinated maritime security operation conducted on 8 March 2026. The Director of Naval Information, Capt. A.A. Folorunsho said in a statement that the operation was based on credible intelligence indicating suspicious maritime criminal activity around Buoy 12 along the strategic Ibaka–Calabar maritime corridor. He said that acting on the intelligence, gunboats from the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base (FOB) IBAKA were immediately vectored to the area to intercept the suspected criminals and deny them freedom of action and restore order within the channel.

The Governor of Cross River State, Bassey Otu, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to deepened collaboration with the military to strengthen maritime and internal security in the state. The governor gave the assurance when he received the Commandant of the Amphibious Training School, Matthias Ibawa Amatso, who paid him a courtesy visit in Calabar alongside senior officers of the institution. Cameroonian shipping company Gulfcam plans to acquire six vessels to expand coastal shipping operations between the ports of Kribi and Douala, as it seeks to strengthen container transport along Cameroon’s main maritime corridor. The announcement was made on March 6, 2026, in Douala by Jean Perrial Nyodog, president of Gulfcam. The company aims to transport around 50% of the freight moving between the two cities, which currently travels more than 60% by road, often along deteriorated routes that increase security risks and lengthen transit times. Coastal shipping is expected to help bypass these road constraints while also serving large vessels that cannot access the river port of Douala, where limited draft prevents their entry.

President Lee Jae Myung held summit talks with Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama agreed to expand bilateral cooperation in trade, maritime security, climate change and agriculture. In their talks, Lee noted the growing trade and investment ties between the two countries and expressed hope to further expand cooperation in various areas, describing Ghana as a major gateway to the African market.
