Navy Urges Closer Ties With Sister Agencies For Improved Operations

Commodore Martins Fakrogha, the Nigerian Navy Ship Jubilee commander, Ikot Abasi, has called for closer collaboration with other security agencies to ensure improved operations. Mr Fakrogha, who made the call while speaking to journalists in Ikot Abasi, said that the navy also needed reliable, intelligent information from the public. He said the fight against illegal oil bunkering would be more effective with military collaboration and public support. He added that the navy “needs this synergy to improve its operations” and “is necessary for greater results.”

China Pledges Support For Nigeria’s Inland Waterways Transport

The People’s Republic of China has pledged to support the Federal Government of Nigeria to drive the inland waterways transport to decongest the port across the country. The Consul General of China, Ms Yan Yuqing, made the disclosure during the Breakfast Meeting on Security and New Technologies for Inland Waterways Transportation, organised by the Zoe Maritime Resources Ltd., in Lagos. Yuqing said Nigeria had several significant rivers, such as the Niger River, the Osun River, and the Cross River, among others, holding immense potential for inland waterway transportation development. She said various productive sectors of the Chinese economy currently drive the inland waterways transportation and China is ready to partner with the present administration in Nigeria to decongest the port across the country.

NSCDC Impounds 8,400 Litres Of Petrol, In A’Ibom Warns Smugglers

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Command in Akwa Ibom says it has impounded 8,400 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) being smuggled out of the country en route Cameroon. The state Commandant, Mr Eluyemi Eluwade who disclosed this at a press briefing in Uyo, said that the PMS was concealed in 28 drums. Eluwade said that personnel of the command’s marine unit intercepted and seized the product on April 13 along Mbo River. ”Our marine squad was on routine patrol along the waterways with its gunboat when they accosted the long wooden boat carrying the product.”This happened near the international waters between Nigeria and Cameroon; the suspects dived into the river in order to escape arrest,” he said.

Navy Decries Economic Loss To Illegal Oil Operations

The Navy has decried the magnitude of economic loss due to acts of illegal oil bunkering and vandalism of oil pipelines along the riverine communities of Nigeria. The Commander, Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) SOROH, Commodore Nanmar Lakan, cried out at Okolomade Community of Abua Odual Local Government Area of Rivers during a tour of sites with newsmen. He said crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism should be stopped because of their negative economic impact on the nation. “It is not good for our economy, and it is not also good for the citizens. I appeal to these undesirable elements to look for other means of survival. “Stolen crude oil is causing problems everywhere. I assure them that my men and I will work day and night to ensure that this illegality stops,” he said.

IMO Decries Rising Unfair Treatment Of Seafarers

The Secretary General of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), Arsenio Dominguez has expressed concerns over rising cases of unfair treatment of seafarers, which he said were regrettably growing. The IMO scribe also called for the release of the crews of Galaxy Leader and MSC Aries in his opening remarks to the IMO Legal Committee meeting. Dominguez said there was a particularly worrying geopolitical context in which recent distressing events have taken place, and that safety and wellbeing of seafarers must remain of utmost importance.He reiterated his call for the immediate release of the crew of Galaxy Leader, a car carrier seized by Houthis in November 2023.
