The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Western Marine Command and maritime stakeholders have renewed their commitment to strengthening security along the Apapa corridor, in a move aimed at protecting critical port operations and enhancing the efficiency of Nigeria’s maritime logistics chain.
The renewed partnership was reaffirmed during a courtesy visit by the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, MWUN, Ibafon Maintenance Unit, led by its Chairman, Oluwole Egbayelo, to the Western Marine Command headquarters.
Two siblings have died after a boat carrying them and five other passengers capsized on a river in Ahoada Town, Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers.
The victims, identified as Mekalachi Gogochuri, 25, and Rejoice Gogochuri, 23, reportedly drowned on Saturday evening while returning home from work through the Aliya (Over Head) River in the community.
Their elder brother, Abraham Gogochuri, told journalists in Port Harcourt on Monday that the incident occurred at about 7:45 p.m. when his siblings boarded the boat to cross the river.
The Nigerian Navy has disrupted an extortion network that subjected fishermen and other waterway users to persistent intimidation and illegal levies within the Bonny Creek axis of Rivers.
The Director of Naval Information, Capt. Abiodun Folorunsho disclosed this in an operational report on Tuesday in Abuja.
According to Folorunsho, following credible intelligence, personnel of Forward Operating Base (FOB) BONNY in conjunction with troops of the Nigerian Army dealt a significant blow to criminal elements operating from a hideout in Asaramatoru community.
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted illicit drugs, expired pharmaceutical products and counterfeit medicines with a combined Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N53.39 billion at the Apapa Port in Lagos, in one of the Service’s largest anti-smuggling operations aimed at safeguarding public health and strengthening national security.
The seizures, comprising nine containers loaded with cannabis, codeine syrup, expired drugs and unregistered pharmaceutical products, were officially handed over to relevant regulatory agencies on Wednesday at the Apapa Area Command.
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), North-Eastern Marine (NEM) Command, has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening inter-agency collaboration through strategic engagements with the Benue State Police Command and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to enhance maritime security, intelligence sharing and coordinated law enforcement operations.

The School of Maritime Operations (SMOPS) has held a closing ceremony to officially end the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Visit, Board, Search and Seisure (VBSS) Training of Trainers (T-O-T) and Advance Military Course on Friday 26 June 2026, at the Naval Training Command (NAVTRAC), Nutekpor.
The course, sponsored by the Danish Government under the Global Maritime Crime Programme (GMCP), was aimed at enhancing the operational capabilities of maritime law enforcement personnel in conducting Visit, Board, Search and Seizure operations. It also sought to develop a pool of qualified instructors capable of delivering standardised VBSS training and strengthening regional cooperation in combating maritime crime.
