House of Reps passes Shippers’ Council Regulatory bill

The House of Representatives has passed the Nigerian Shipping and Port Economic Regulatory Agency Bill 2023, which seeks to repeal the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) Act Cap N133 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria. The Executive Secretary of the Council, Barr. Pius Akutah, who made the disclosure during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Operational Retreat for Middle Level Management officers of the council in Lagos said the bill is currently awaiting passage by the Senate and presidential assent. Akutah expressed optimism that the Senate would pass the bill soon, given that it has already done the first reading.

NPA Chairman Urges Nigerians To Shelve Protest, Support Tinubu’s Reforms

The Chairman of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Sen. Adedayo Adeyeye, has appealed to Nigerians to shelve the national protest scheduled to commence on Aug.1 and support President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Adeyeye told newsmen in Ibadan that the planned protest would bring untold hardship, given the current situation in the country. He expressed concern that hoodlums and miscreants could hijack the protest, undermining the organisers’ good intentions. “The fear that we have is that hoodlums, miscreants, and evil people will hijack the protest, turn it violent, and bring untold hardship on innocent people,” he said.

Despite Reduced Piracy In Gulf of Guinea, Nigeria Pays Over N465bn War Risk Insurance Since 2022

Despite notable progress in reducing piracy on Nigerian waters and the Gulf of Guinea, findings by Shipping Position Daily have revealed that Nigeria has paid over N465 billion in war risk insurance premiums since 2022. War risk insurance is a type of insurance that covers damage due to acts of war, including invasion, insurrection, rebellion and hijacking. It has two components: war risk liability, which covers people and items inside the craft and is calculated based on the indemnity amount, and war risk hull, which covers the craft itself and is calculated based on the value of the craft. The premium varies based on the expected stability of the countries to which the vessel will travel.

Nigeria Navy Chief Says Oil Production Up Due To Improved Security

Nigeria’s oil output has risen to between 1.6 million and 1.7 million barrels per day after the government beefed up security to curb crude theft, Chief of Naval Staff Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla said. Crude production in Nigeria, a member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), stood at 1.2 million barrels per day in February, Ogalla said. Oil major Shell has exited the country. “We have stepped up surveillance and enforcement in the oil producing areas,” the naval chief said. “Right now, as we speak, the Nigerian Navy has 12 vessels on the sea to protect oil production and stem oil theft. We have arrested over 16 vessels, so far.” Ogalla said the force has blocked channels for the sale of illegally refined petroleum products.

FG To Partner Gulf Of Guinea Commission In Tackling Maritime Crimes

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to working closely with the Gulf of Guinea Commission (GGC) in tackling piracy and unlawful maritime crimes. Tuggar disclosed this in a statement by Alkasim Abdulkadir, Special Assistant to the minister at the 6th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of State and Government of GGC held in Accra, Ghana. According to him, the importance and significance of Gulf of Guinea to Africa cannot be over emphasised in respect to the promotion of a safe and secure region. Tuggar said, “To this end, Nigeria takes this opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to the work and mandate of the GGC.

IMO Launches ‘Insider Threats’ Toolkit to Enhance Maritime Security

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has introduced a new toolkit to help the maritime industry address the growing threat of “insider threats,” which refers to security risks posed by employees who may be involved in or facilitate security incidents due to ignorance, complacency, or malicious intent. Insider threats can provide a strategic advantage to terrorists and organized crime groups seeking to exploit security weaknesses in ports and ships. In response, IMO has collaborated with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to develop the Insider Threat Toolkit.
