Cross River State Governor, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, has declared the state’s waterways safe for investment, reaffirming his administration’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives, property, and maritime investments while positioning Cross River as a leading destination for the blue economy.
Governor Otu made the declaration on Saturday during an inspection visit to the Calabar Marina Business Hub, where he toured the newly introduced MV-Eja, a ferry owned by SeaExpress Transit, now operating on the Calabar-Cameroon commercial route.

The United States has donated $4 million worth of military equipment to the Ghana Armed Forces to strengthen the country’s defence and security capabilities.
The donation, which includes protective gear, radar systems and training materials, is expected to enhance the operational capacity of the Ghana Army and Ghana Navy, particularly in surveillance, communication and maritime security.

The Nigerian Navy has intercepted an oil tanker allegedly conveying stolen crude oil valued at over N660m and arrested 12 crew members in a renewed crackdown on crude oil theft in the country’s maritime domain.
The vessel, MT FILIA (IMO No. 8662684), which sails under the flag of São Tomé and Príncipe, was arrested on July 23, 2026, within the offshore oil terminal in Akwa Ibom State by personnel of the Eastern Naval Command under the ongoing Operation Delta Sentinel.
Nigeria’s vast marine resources remain significantly underutilised despite growing recognition of the blue economy as a key driver of economic diversification, with industry stakeholders warning that inadequate funding, policy fragmentation and slow implementation of reforms are preventing the country from unlocking an estimated $296 billion in economic value.
Stretching across an 850-kilometre Atlantic coastline, more than 10,000 kilometres of navigable inland waterways and some of West Africa’s busiest seaports, Nigeria possesses one of the continent’s largest blue economy assets.
The Ports Authority Police (Western) Command has commended the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) for donating operational security equipment aimed at strengthening security across the nation’s seaports and waterfronts.
The presentation, held on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, was made on behalf of the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, by the Port Manager of the Lagos Port Complex (LPC), Mr. Adebowale Lawal, alongside other senior officials of the Authority.
Speaking during the presentation, Lawal said the donation reflects the NPA’s unwavering commitment to reinforcing the security architecture of Nigeria’s ports.
The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has called for increased operational support from the Nigerian Navy, particularly in the Eastern Zone, as part of efforts to strengthen port security, improve trade facilitation and enhance the competitiveness of Nigeria’s seaports.
The Managing Director of NPA, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, made the call on Tuesday while receiving the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abubakar Mustapha, during a courtesy visit to the Authority’s headquarters in Marina, Lagos.
