Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, made this pronouncement at the International Maritime Institute of Nigeria workshop. Admiral Ogalla highlighted the threats posed by piracy, illegal fishing, crude oil theft, and transnational crimes to the prosperity of the maritime sector. He stressed the importance of collaboration, shared knowledge, and modern technologies in combating maritime crimes and promoting sustainable economic activities.

The operational agreement between A.P. Moller Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd under the Gemini Cooperation has taken effect even ahead of its official launch in February 2025. The new network consists of 27 and 29 efficient ocean mainliner services supported by an extensive network of 30 agile, intraregional shuttle services. It will comprise either 300 or 340 vessels with a capacity exceeding 3 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of container to achieve 90 percent schedule reliability. The ambition is to deliver a flexible and interconnected ocean network with industry-leading schedule reliability above 90 percent once fully phased in.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has disclosed that 134 illegal refineries were destroyed in the past week. The NNPC also stated that 63 illegal pipeline connections were uncovered during the period. In a visual report, the NNPC stated that at about 2 am, a joint team of security agents discovered a large wooden boat illicitly loading stolen crude oil from Barge AGS01 within the OML 18 operating area. It noted that based on credible intelligence, the large wooden boat was caught receiving crude oil from the barge.

The Alumni of Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron (AMANO) has been granted observer status at the Abuja Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Port State Control for West and Central African Region. A statement by the Publicity Secretary, AMANO, Oamien Ailemen, disclosed that the approval came after an application by AMANO and a recommendation by the Port State Committee meeting held in Congo Brazzaville from September 10-13, 2024. As an observer, AMANO will participate in and contribute to the MoU’s efforts to eradicate substandard ships within the region covering West and Central African states.

The Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base (NNFOB) in Bonny, Rivers State, successfully rescued 20 passengers, including women and children, from a pirate attack on the Port Harcourt-Bonny sea route. The Navy thwarted the abduction attempt after uncovering a new strategy employed by pirates to target travelers. Commander Maksum Mohammed of the NNFOB in Bonny confirmed the incident during a briefing with newsmen. He revealed that intelligence reports suggested some boat operators might be collaborating with pirates to execute these attacks.

A new Commissioner of Police in charge of Ports Authority Police (Western) Command, Apapa, Lagos; Ibrahim Balarabe Maikaba has officially assumed duty as the 32nd Commissioner of Police. This follows the redeployment of his predecessor; Olanrewaju Olawale Ishola, to the Lagos State Command. A press statement signed by the Command spokesman, ASP Isaac Hundeyin noted that CP Maikaba, a seasoned officer with over three decades of experience, is set to enhance security operations at Nigeria’s ports, urging stakeholders to offer their full support for effective trade facilitation.
