The Police Command in Akwa Ibom says it has rescued two persons who were involved in a boat mishap along the Ibaka waterways in Mbo Local Government Area.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, disclosed this in a statement in Uyo on Friday.
John said that the incident occurred at about 1.30p.m on 17 Sept. 17 when a blue W23 speedboat christened: “LET’S PRAY” sank while travelling on the waterway.
She said that preliminary investigation showed that the boat driver attempted to adjust the boat’s seacock to allow accumulated water onboard to drain.

A former Special Adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan on Maritime Affairs, Leke Oyewole, has blamed the failure of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to effectively track speedboats, skiffs and other small crafts navigating the nation’s waterways, for the continued vulnerability of vessels to sea robbery and other maritime crimes.
Oyewole said, while government agencies had developed capabilities to monitor large commercial vessels, little attention had been paid to the smaller boats frequently used by criminals to approach and attack vessels on Nigerian waters.

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, (NIMASA), deploying assets of the Integrated National Security and Waterways Protection Infrastructure, otherwise known as the Deep Blue structure and relevant maritime security units, embarked on a coordinated enforcement operation code named “Blue- Green” across key operational areas in Lagos.

The Nigerian Navy has uncovered approximately 182,000 litres of substance suspected to be stolen crude oil in Bethel Creeks in Rivers.
The Director of Naval Information, Capt. Abiodun Folorunsho, made this known in an operational report made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Abuja on Tuesday.
Folorunsho said that the discovery was made by the Forward Operating Base (FOB) BONNY on Tuesday, during a follow-up operation based on actionable information concerning suspicious activities around the creeks.

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has disclosed that Nigeria has recorded zero reported piracy incidents in its territorial waters for about four consecutive years.
Abbas stated this on Tuesday in Calabar while speaking at the graduation ceremony of participants of Naval Warfare Course 10 at the Naval War College Nigeria.
He said the achievement reflected improved maritime security and stressed the need for the Nigerian Navy to sustain its operational tempo against emerging threats in the nation’s maritime domain.
