World Maritime Day 2026

From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence
On 24 September, the global maritime community comes together to celebrate World Maritime Day 2026.
This year's theme, “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence,” has been selected by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for both 2026 and 2027. For the first time, the World Maritime Day theme will run across two years, reflecting a sustained focus on turning international maritime policy into meaningful action.
It is a theme that goes to the heart of how the maritime industry operates.
For decades, international conventions, regulations, codes and guidelines have provided the framework for safer, more secure, efficient and environmentally responsible shipping. But regulation alone cannot deliver those outcomes.

The real difference is made when policy becomes practice.
It happens when standards are understood and implemented onboard vessels. When crews receive the right training. When risks are properly assessed. When security procedures are followed. When ports, operators and authorities communicate effectively. And when lessons learned from incidents are translated into stronger procedures for the future.
The IMO describes the ultimate objective of this process as achieving consistently safe, secure, efficient and environmentally sustainable shipping, supported by capacity-building, technical cooperation, training and knowledge sharing.
Putting Maritime Excellence into Practice
For Agwe Global, the message behind World Maritime Day has particular resonance.
Across maritime security, intelligence, risk assessment, vessel support and specialist training, effective policies and procedures only have value when they work in real operational environments.
That means understanding the threats facing vessels and crews, identifying vulnerabilities before they become incidents, providing decision-makers with timely intelligence and ensuring those responsible for maritime security have the knowledge and support they need.
The maritime environment continues to evolve. Geopolitical tensions, emerging technologies, cybersecurity, environmental responsibilities and changing security threats all present new challenges for those operating at sea and ashore. The IMO has highlighted many of these areas as priorities for translating policy into effective implementation during its 2026–2027 campaign.
The People Behind Global Shipping
World Maritime Day is also an opportunity to recognise the people who make the maritime industry possible.
Seafarers, port workers, security personnel, vessel operators, maritime authorities and countless professionals ashore collectively support an industry upon which the global economy depends. At least 80% of international trade by volume is carried by sea, according to the United Nations.
IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez has placed particular emphasis this year on ensuring implementation makes a tangible difference for those working at sea, stating:
“Implementation must make a difference where it matters most - for the people working at sea. Seafarers come first. Always.”
That is an important reminder that behind every policy, regulation, security assessment and operational decision are people whose safety depends upon getting those decisions right.
Celebrating World Maritime Day
On World Maritime Day 2026, Agwe Global joins the international maritime community in recognising the people, organisations and partnerships working every day to make global shipping safer, more secure and more resilient.
The policies provide the framework.
People put them into practice.
And it is through knowledge, collaboration, training, vigilance and continual improvement that we can collectively power maritime excellence.
Happy World Maritime Day from everyone at Agwe Global.
Experience. Insight. Safer Operations.
